The 3 most important things you need to consider before you choose your video backdrop

Before you even start looking at the gazillion options for your video backdrop, you need to be clear about a few things first. The last thing you want is to be overwhelmed and stressed with this process... after all, this is an exciting step for you and I want you to enjoy it! So let's get clear on few things so you know where to focus your efforts.

1. Your Brand: I know, this might seem a bit obvious...YET, I've seen so many miss the mark on this one. Your brand is not just your colors, although that is an important consideration, it's not the only one. What is your brand vibe, how do you want people to feel when they watch your live videos?

Your video backdrop helps to set the mood, or the vibe that you want to create.

Think of a professional and considered fortune 500 CEO with blue and gold as the company brand colors. Would the backdrop below create the professional considered mood of that CEO? Probably not ;)

Granted, this is an extreme example, but you get the idea. Deciding on the vibe you want your live videos to have will help you whittle the one gazillion options down to half a gazillion options. It will also help you create the perfect environment for attracting your ideal clients.

2. Wardrobe: Does your wardrobe consist of lots of fun patterns and bright colors or do you prefer to keep things simple with an interchangeable wardrobe of black and white? See where I'm going here?

If your wardrobe is full of patterns and colors, you'll want to focus your efforts on creating a solid video backdrop. If your wardrobe is mostly solid colors, You'll want to focus on a contrasting solid color or something with a pattern or texture. Reviewing your wardrobe (your most worn pieces) will help you whittle down the options even more (and spoiler, help you avoid a common mistake!)

3. Your Space: Do you have a dedicated space to go live from? If so, how much room do you have? Is there a solid wall behind you or something else? Or, are you going to be using different spaces depending on availability? In other words, do you need something portable or  something more permanent. Knowing your space and it's requirements will save you time, money, and your sanity! :)

Types of Video Backdrops

In this section we'll look at 3 different types of video backdrops, natural, portable, and virtual. You should already have an idea of the direction you're going in based on your space, if you're still not sure, this breakdown with the pros and cons should help you narrow down the options considerably.

1. Natural Video Backdrops: If you have an office or permanent space where you'll be streaming from a natural video backdrop may be just what you need. The simplest and most budget friendly solution for your backdrop is your natural surroundings. A tidy bookshelf, table & chairs, a plain or carefully decorated wall all make for a fabulous natural backdrop for your live videos.

If you have a plain wall that you want to spruce up as an accent wall, a gallon of paint with a little time and effort is a fairly inexpensive option.

Not into painting? I feel you there, I painted every room of my house a few years ago and if I never see a can of paint again it will be too soon! Another budget friendly option is peel n stick wallpaper. Not only is it budget friendly, it's becoming increasingly more popular so the options for colors and designs are plentiful!

 2. Portable Video Backdrops: These can be purchased or DIY-ed. If you're thinking of DIY-ing your backdrop, the key is to keep it simple. A 3ft x 5ft foam board from a craft store cost around $8/$10 and can be covered in a fabric of your choice or with peel n stick wallpaper. The foam board is super light weight and easy to move around. The down side here is that the foam board is delicate, so you'll want to be gentle with it.

If you want something a little more sturdy but still portable, a collapsible back drop like this one can be order from amazon at around $50. You can also get a stand for it at around $25. I have one myself that I use without the stand, it props up well enough for me that I haven't purchased a stand yet.

 3. Virtual Video Backdrops: Green screen fun :) Although this can be done in a super simple way, if you're not techie or you don't enjoy figuring out a few techie things, this may not be a good option for you. A virtual camera app like manycam, a green screen (another portable option pictured below $40/$50), and a photo resources like deposit photo is all you need. This is a fun option because you can change out your graphics to get a new look for just the cost of the photo, on deposit photo that's about $1!

Common Video Backdrop Mistakes

Avoid these common mistakes and whether your backdrop is DIY-ed or purchased, you'll be looking professional and feeling more confident about your live videos!

The biggest mistake is not planning before you start buying or DIY-ing, so remember to consider your brand, wardrobe, and space before you start. This will help you avoid most of the common mistakes I see people making.

Matchy Matchy - Same or similar color/pattern top as your backdrop. red on red or stripes with stripes can be really hard on the eyes and have viewers tuning out fast. With solid on solid matching colors, you could look like a floating head!

Tight Patterns - tiny tight patterns can appear to move and have a dizzying effect that will leave viewers feeling nauseous... that goes for your backdrop and your clothes!

Sloppy DIY - I'm the biggest fan of DIY-ing any and everything, it's super budget friendly, gives you more control over your vibe, and lets your creativity shine. With that said, I've seen some real messes with DIY backdrops! Keep it simple, don't over think it, and ask a trusted friend or mentor what they think.

Pro Tips:

1. Be sure any fabric or curtain is pulled tight and smooth for a professional and clean look.

2. Whether DIY-ed or purchased, be sure you're backdrop completely covers the frame so we don't see the wall or room that's behind your backdrop.

 3. If using your natural surroundings, be sure to check what's in your camera view...no dirty laundry, pictures on the wall are level, bookshelf is tidy, etc...

A little thought, knowing your options, and avoiding common mistakes are your keys to creating the perfect backdrop for your live videos.
